FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I eligible for Meals on Wheels?

To be eligible you must live within our coverage area. You must be unable to shop and prepare meals for yourself. You must have no other alternatives for provision of meals.

How long does it take to get on the meal service?

Our client list is dynamic and changes regularly.  Clients are grouped together on one delivery route based upon their proximity to one another.  There may be a waiting list.  Typical wait times are a few days to a few weeks.

What if I require a special diet?

We will honor special diets as determined by your physician.  Examples would be: low sodium; diabetic; soft diet.  Allergy requirements will also be honored.  It must be remembered, however, that we cannot accommodate individual likes and dislikes as this is not a restaurant service.  The diets are designed and overseen by dieticians at each of our meal preparation sites.

What is the cost?

The cost is $7.50 per day which includes one hot meal and one cold bagged meal.  No one is denied the service for financial reasons.  The cost of the meal can be supplemented in part or in full if the Client Services Committee determines that it is necessary.

Do I have to live alone to receive meals?

We do focus our service on those individuals who are isolated with little family or outside help.  However, in certain cases we will accommodate people who live with someone but are alone during the day or aren’t getting much help from their housemate.

Will the drivers bring the meals inside?

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic our drivers are no longer able to bring the meals inside the home.  Drivers will knock on the client's door, place the meals on a table or chair the client has placed near their door and wait until the client retrieves the meal.

Can the driver leave my meal if I am not home?

No.  Part of our mission is to see each of our clients for every delivery.  We want to confirm their safety on a daily basis and do not want to risk food borne illness by leaving meals unrefrigerated.  If you will not be home, we ask that a call be made to our office one day in advance.  If we expect you to be at home and there is no answer, we will assume that there is an emergency and 911 may be called.

Is Meals on Wheels only for a limited period of time?

You may remain on the program as long as there are no changes to your eligibility.
